Overshown, Texas D comes up big in win over West Virginia

In a conference dominated by offense, it was junior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and the Texas defense that stood tall in the Longhorns’ 17-13 home win over the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday.

Overshown finished with eight tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Texas (5-2, 4-2 Big 12) climbed one spot to No. 21 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll after outlasting West Virginia (4-3, 3-3).

The former Arp star provided arguably the biggest play of the game with a sack of West Virginia quarterback Jarret Doege (Lubbock Cooper) on third down and goal and force the Mountaineers to kick a field goal for the final points of the game.

Overshown and the Texas defense held West Virginia to just 13 points in five trips to the red zone. The Longhorns forced turnovers on downs on the final two defensive series of the game, both of which ended when the Mountaineers could not convert on 4th & 1.

His strong play as a senior at Arp helped Overshown earn Under Armour All-American honors as well as spots on the AP and Texas Sports Writers Association All-State first teams.

Texas is tied with Kansas State (4-3, 4-2) and Oklahoma (5-2, 4-2) for third place in the Big 12, a half-game behind second place Oklahoma State (5-1, 4-1).

The Longhorns visit the Kansas Jayhawks (0-7, 0-6) on Nov. 21.
