Yesterday, many thought that a deal was in place to bring Alabama Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin to Houston. The rumor was quickly dispelled as Houston announced that there would be several men in the running for the job. This morning, the school announced that Major Applewhite, Houston’s Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach under Tom Herman, would receive the honor.

Applewhite has been nearly everywhere in his coaching career, serving at Syracuse, Alabama, Texas, and Rice. He’s had a smattering of success every single place he’s been.
More importantly, Applewhite doesn’t seem to be in a rush to jump to a different, more prominent head coaching gig, which is the opposite of the worries surrounding a potential Lane Kiffin hire.
Applewhite seems to be a solid replacement for Tom Herman, a hire that will ensure the continuity of recruiting on the offensive side of the ball, and that Houston gets a guy who is there for Houston, and not to use the program as a stepping stone to get to a Power 5 conference school.
