Chevin Calloway reached a decision to join the Iowa football program last week, but the timing to make it known just didn’t seem right.
As people in his hometown of Dallas mourned the ambush of five police officers at a rally on downtown streets, the top-ranked high school cornerback in Texas and a top-100 recruit nationally delayed announcing his college choice until Monday.
“There were so many things more important than football going down here right now, a lot of crazy stuff. Out of respect to the victims and their families, I decided to wait,” Calloway said. “It seemed to be the right thing to do.”
Calloway, who ultimately selected the Hawkeyes over Texas, informed Iowa coaches on Friday that he would be committing to the Hawkeyes on Monday. He made his public announcement on Periscope late Monday afternoon.
