Martellus Bennett Is Just Here To Win, And He Doesn’t Care What You Think

Over the last eight NFL seasons, former Alief Taylor High School, and Texas A&M University standout, Martellus Bennett is playing in his first Super Bowl. In a league where the players have a small window, and a team of public relations people around them, it’s hard to have someone standout. However, Bennett has found a way to rise in this league by doing it his way and by doing one thing that hardly anyone else is in this league does.

Be himself.

When you ask him, or his brother Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael, a question they’ll give you their unfiltered opinion. If you ask them about a former quarterback, they’ll tell you that Jay Cutler was the “Worst quarterback in the NFL.” Ask them about someone that neither of them have played for like Sam Bradford, and the brothers call him with a smirk “The greatest quarterback in the NFL” or “a real Joe Montana”. (USA Today)

And, when they’re asked about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and one of the faces of the NFL, Houston Texans’ J.J. Watt, the answers are amazing.

ROGER GOODELL

Michael: “A–hole. Nah, I’m just joking — you can’t say that. Overpaid.”

J.J. WATT

Michael: “Dominant player.”

Martellus: “Corny. Half of the NFL is corny, though.”

Michael: “People love J.J. Watt, but they don’t really like J.J. Watt, know what I’m saying?” (ESPN)

After the New England Patriots AFC Championship game victory most of the team was celebrating; but in a more reserved manner since most of the team had made a Super Bowl before. Except, there in the middle of the reporters, and cameras, there was Bennett celebrating with the Patriots cheerleaders with an Alfred E. Newman type grin on his face while Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” plays in the background.

During the media availability in the run up to Super Bowl 51, there wasn’t much said from either the Patriots, or the Atlanta Falcons. Most of the interviews were canned answers; which in the “Patriots Way” is the status quo.

However, during a recent media scrum with Tom Brady, there was Bennett right in the middle disrupting everything by yelling for his quarterback. You can see in the linked video that the interruption snaps Brady out of his canned robotic answer, and gives him a sense of relief.

With he injury of fellow tight end, Rob Gronkowski, Bennet has been the dominant force on the field that the team needed. Picking up that production, and being that brash of unfiltered attitude is what has helped keep this Patriots team loose on their run to their fifth Super Bowl championship.

And, he’s been doing it by one way, and one way only: his way.
