One of Tom Herman’s signees from his first recruiting class at Texas will be allowed to enroll at the university. On Tuesday, athletic director Mike Perrin confirmed that incoming freshman tight end Reese Leitao will be allowed to keep his scholarship and be a part of the football program.

Leitao, originally from Jenks, Oklahoma was arrested in February on felony drug charges which include possession and intent to distribute within 2,000 feet of a school. Last week, Leitao had those charges reduced to a misdemeanor. He reached a plea deal with local prosecutors in Oklahoma on Tuesday with a four-year deferred sentence.

“Based on several discussions with people who know Reese well as a person both on and off the field, he’s been a good student, highly-regarded teammate and leader among his peers,” Perrin said in part in a statement on Tuesday. “All indications are that he’s a young man with a history of good character and behavior who made a poor decision.”

Head coach Tom Herman did not release a statement but told the Austin American-Statesman through a spokesman, “I support Mike’s decision and look forward to getting Reese on campus.”
