Sanders leads Cowboys over Cyclones: Denton Ryan alum lifts OSU in Big 12 clash

Redshirt sophomore Spencer Sanders posted more than 300 yards of total offense and overcame two interceptions to lift the Oklahoma State Cowboys to a 24-21 home win over the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday.

The win helps No. 6 Oklahoma State (4-0, 3-0) stay unbeaten in the Big 12 while Iowa State (3-2, 3-1) dropped six spots to No. 23 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll.

Sanders completed 20 of 29 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown to go along with 15 carries for 82 yards and another score. His 14-yard rushing touchdown gave Oklahoma State the lead midway through the third quarter gave the Cowboys a 21-14 lead that they would not relinquish.

The former Denton Ryan star posted a 46-6 record in high school and passed for 8,747 yards despite sustaining season-ending injuries on two occasions during his prep career.

Oklahoma State hosts Texas (3-2, 2-2) at 3 p.m. on Saturday on Fox.

 

Wilson, Buckeyes open season with blowout win over Huskers

Garrett Wilson and the Ohio State Buckeyes finally kicked off the season and looked every bit like a playoff contender in a 52-17 home win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday.

The win helped Ohio State (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) jump from No. 5 to No. 3 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll after beating Nebraska (0-1, 0-1).

The former Austin Lake Travis star caught seven passes for 129 yards and a touchdown on Saturday.

He had a 42-yard touchdown reception that put Ohio State ahead early 14-7 late in the first quarter. Wilson also had two punt returns for 23 yards.

Wilson caught 204 yards for 3,359 yards and 55 touchdowns at Lake Travis.

Ohio State has an early test on Saturday with a visit to No. 18 Penn State (0-1, 0-1) at 6:30 p.m. on ABC.

 

Jeffers helps Texas Tech snap losing streak

Texas Tech senior linebacker Riko Jeffers had nine tackles to help the red Raiders down West Virginia 37-27 on Saturday.

The former Sachse star had two tackles for loss to help Texas Tech (2-3, 1-3 Big 12) snap a three-game conference losing streak with a win over West Virginia (3-2, 2-2).

Jeffers was the unanimous District 10-6A Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Sachse after posting 141 tackles and helping the team win the district title and go 11-1 on the season.

Texas Tech hosts No. 24 Oklahoma (3-2, 2-2) at 7 p.m. on Fox.

 

McCormick runs all over LA Tech

UTSA sophomore running back Sincere McCormick’s trio of touchdowns helped the UTSA Roadrunners outlast the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 27-24 on Saturday.

The former Converse Judson star posted 167 yards on 37 carries and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lift UTSA (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA) over Louisiana Tech (3-3, 2-2). The Roadrunners snapped a three-game losing streak.

McCormick’s 45-yard rushing score with 6 minutes, 16 seconds remaining proved to be the winning score.

McCormick was a star at nearby Judson where he had more than 3,400 yards and 43 touchdowns and was an all-state first-team selection as a junior.

UTSA visits Florida Atlantic (1-1, 1-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

 

Tune helps Houston to road win at Navy

Junior quarterback Clayton Tune threw three touchdown passes to help Houston to a 37-21 road win at Navy on Friday.

Houston (2-1, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) scored 28 unanswered points to take control of the game against Navy (3-3, 3-1).

The former Carrollton Hebron star completed 24 of 34 passes for 316 yards in the win. His 51-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Stevenson gave Houston a 16-13 lead it would not relinquish.

Tune passed for 6,686 yards and 66 touchdowns at Hebron and rushed for 1,074 yards and 20 rushing scores.

Houston hosts Central Florida (3-2, 2-2) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
