Retired Texas Longhorn Vince Young has been named to the 2024 SEC Legends Class.
Except, the former Madison graduate never played a single snap in the conference.
Despite Young spending the duration of his three college seasons in the Big 12, he was one of 16 former players named to the 2024 SEC Legends Class today, honoring those who belonged in the conference in the past, as well as those currently competing.
The Texas Longhorns competed in the Big 12 from 1996 up until 2023. This year marks their new tenure in the SEC.
During his last season with the Burnt Orange, Young was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy while claiming the Davey O’Brien and Maxwell awards. The Longhorns went undefeated that season, including a BCS National Championship Game triumph over USC. Young was the first player in FBS history to throw for over 3,000 passing yards and scramble for 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, paving the way for dual threat quarterbacks from that point on.
A member of the Longhorn Hall of Honor, his No. 10 jersey is one of only six retired by the Burnt Orange. He is also enshrined in the College Football, Rose Bowl, State of Texas Sports, and Texas High School Football halls of fame.
Former Texas defensive tackle Rodrique Wright compared Young to “Lebron James in Houston when he was coming out of high school.”
For three years under coach Ray Seals at Madison, Young compiled nearly 13,000 yards of total offense. In his senior year, he was must-watch, passing for 3,819 yards and 59 touchdowns. The highlights were plenty, capped by a 61–58 victory in the 5A Regionals over the previously undefeated North Shore. In the game, Young accounted for over 400 yards of total offense, passing for three touchdowns and rushing for two additional scores before a crowd of 45,000 at the Houston Astrodome.
Young and other members of the 2024 SEC Legends Class will honored at events surrounding the SEC Football Championship Game in Atlanta this December.
