3A Team of the Week: Pottsboro Cardinals
Pottsboro welcomed Winnsboro, the number 7 team in 3A Division I, into town last Friday for a matchup that could have big implications in the 5-3A Division I title race.
It didn’t disappoint.
Late in the third quarter, Pottsboro looked dead and buried, trailing 35-17.
However, with under a minute to go in the period, Cardinal quarterback Halen Flanagan connected with Reid Thompson for a 38-yard score that cut the deficit to 35-23 and gave the Cardinals some life heading into the final 12 minutes.
The headlines in the final quarter belonged to Cardinal running back Major McBride. He scored on a 19-yard scamper up the middle with under eight minutes to go before adding an 18-yard touchdown run late on to complete Pottsboro’s furious comeback and seal a big 36-35, upset victory.
McBride finished with 171 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, while Flanagan threw for 241 yards and a score.
The victory moved Pottsboro atop the district standings as the Cardinals are now the only remaining unbeaten team in District 5-3A Division I play. They’ll be back in action this Friday as they travel to take on Emory Rains.
