4A Team of the Week: Sweeny Bulldogs
The 72nd Battle of the Bernard between Sweeny and Columbia didn’t disappoint with three lead changes in the final 12 minutes.
The Bulldogs jumped ahead 14-7 early in the fourth quarter on a 38-yard touchdown run by Cayden Jones.
However, Columbia wasn’t going to take its first district loss without a fight. Caden Bell found paydirt on a 12-yard touchdown with just over two minutes to go. The Roughnecks then rolled the dice and converted a two-point conversion to take a 15-14 lead.
Sweeny though had one final card to play. The Bulldogs drove into the red zone and set up Jaden Wick for the game-winning 30-yard field goal to snatch the 17-15 victory.

The win moves Sweeny into the top four in its district as the Bulldogs hunt for their first playoff berth since 2021. They’ll have another big test this Friday as they travel to a La Marque team that’s off to a 3-1 start in district.
