Week Five 4A Team of the Week: Kaufman
4A Team of the Week: Kaufman Lions
Coming into last Friday, it had not been the start to the season Kaufman would’ve hoped for. The Lions sat at 0-4 with losses by 23 points or more the previous two weeks.
Their trip to Sunnyvale didn’t seem like it’d be any easier. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football had the Lions as 30-point underdogs heading into the game.
However, despite trailing 28-19 heading into the fourth quarter, Kaufman didn’t fold.
Quarterback Ty Burleson connected with Chance Fanus over the top for a 41-yard score before his teammates pushed him into the end zone on a quarterback sneak for a three-yard touchdown on Kaufman’s next drive. That touchdown ended up being the game-winner as the Lions held on to a 32-28 victory.
Burleson finished with 140 yards passing, 36 yards rushing and three total touchdowns. Aljour Miles II led the receiving corps with five catches for 75 yards, while Elijah Rose paced the rushing attack with 54 yards on 16 carries. Johnathan Wrenn also had a pick-six for the Lions in the first quarter.
With its first victory of the season now under its belt, Kaufman will be on a bye next week before travelling to Paris for its first district contest on Oct. 6.
