4A Team of the Week: Beeville Jones Trojans
Beeville Jones is certainly getting a baptism by fire in its non-district schedule. Last Friday, the Trojans travelled to take on Somerset, the number ten team in 4A Division I.
The Trojans jumped out to a 14-7 lead at halftime thanks to two touchdowns from quarterback Elijah Sustaita.
However, arguably the play of the game came in the third quarter. Somerset was driving but faced a fourth down at the Trojan 22 yard line. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they botched the snap. The play was never blown dead and Davyn Perez came out of the pile with the ball. He raced the other way for a 78-yard touchdown that would put Beeville Jones up 21-13 (highlight below).
That dramatic turn of events helped Beeville hang on for the eventual 24-21 victory.
In addition to the defense, a lot of credit has to go to the Trojans’ rushing attack. It racked up 235 yards on the ground with junior Ryne Espinoza, 72 yards on 16 carries, and Perez, 60 yards on six carries, leading the way.
Looking ahead, the road doesn’t get any easier for Beeville Jones. The Trojans will get a visit from Cuero, the number four team in 4A Division II, this Friday. It will be their final game before opening district play against Floresville on Oct. 6.
