The past six seasons, Hempstead won just three total games. The Bobcats have not been to the playoffs since 2017.
But under first-year head coach Kris Gordon, the tide is turning. Back on Oct. 9, the Bobcats snapped a 30-game district losing streak with a 34-14 win over Wharton.
That win meant all the Bobcats had to do this past Friday was knock off Sweeny and a playoff spot would be theirs.
They were not about to let that opportunity slip away. According to Tony Blalock, Bobcat quarterback Keenan Wilson finished with 302 yards and five total touchdowns as Hempstead pulled away from Palacios for the 42-32 victory.
It’s a huge accomplishment for a program that is on its third head coach in three years and finished just 1-9 a year ago.
The Bobcats will be tested in their final two regular season games, starting this Friday when they host Edna, but they are guaranteed a playoff berth no matter what happens.
