4A Team of the Week: Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs

Port Lavaca Calhoun didn’t have the start to the season it would’ve hoped for, losing its first four games and finishing non-district play 1-4.

However, it appears the Sandcrabs are hitting their stride just in time for the games that matter. This past Friday, they found themselves in a tight battle in their district opener against 4-1 La Vernia.

The Sandcrabs trailed 20-19 when they got the ball back at their own 38 with just under three minutes to go. They slowly but surely advanced the ball down the field, eventually setting up a go-ahead 22-yard field goal by Daniel Solano with just 10 seconds left to secure the 22-20 victory.

Along with Solano’s kick, the other play of the game came all the way back in the first quarter. After La Vernia’s opening touchdown, Sandcrab defensive back Izaiah Cabrales picked off a fake extra point attempt and returned it for two points for Calhoun. Those two points ended up being the difference in the game.

Cabrales also had another pick, while Eli Rodriguez also had an interception for the Sandcrab defense.

Offensively, Fischer Franck paced the Calhoun rushing attack with 110 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Alex Parker finished six for eight for 74 yards and a touchdown. Darrik Salinas led the receiving corps with two catches for 44 yards and that receiving score.

The Sandcrabs will hope this win will be the turning point in their season. They’ll look to keep the momentum going this Friday when they play host to Beeville Jones.
