Sonora had been off to a hot start again this year, entering week six at 4-1 and 1-0 in district play.
However, the Broncos hit a major roadblock early in their game against Christoval, trailing 20-0.
The Broncos didn’t blink. Armani Coronado rushed for 163 yards on 24 carries, while quarterback Aaron Segura threw for 325 yards as the Broncos fought all the way back to tie the game at 32 with just a minute left.
That’s when chaos happened. Segura found Angel Diaz over the middle for a big gain. Just as Diaz was being wrapped up by defenders, he handed the ball to tight end Evan Arredondo who took it the rest of the way for a 41-yard touchdown.
It was a wild play that proved to be the difference in Sonora’s impressive 40-32 victory.
Pass from QB (Built Ford Tough Player of the week)Aaron Segura to #5 Angel Diaz. With 3 defenders on Diaz, Diaz laterals it back to #88 Evan Arredondo who runs it in for a TD!
Arredondo was the leader in the passing attack with five catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Jayden Welborn also had eight catches for 90 yards and a score, while Wyatt Killough had 69 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Sonora is now 5-1 for the second year in a row. The Broncos will look to keep their momentum going after their bye week when they host Ozona on Oct. 16.
