Week Six 4A Team of the Week: Clint Mountain View
4A Team of the Week: Mountain View Lobos
For the first time since 2012, bragging rights in Clint will belong to the Mountain View Lobos.
Omar Nevarez capped off a big night with the game-winning touchdown run in overtime to give the Lobos the 27-21 victory over Clint last Friday. He finished with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
Mountain View almost didn’t get a chance at overtime. It took a touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Alcala to receiver Angel Gomez with just 20 seconds left just to give the Lobos a shot. And after they fell short on a missed two-point conversion two years ago, head coach DJ Check decided to trust his team and kick the game-tying extra point.
It’s safe to say that call paid off, giving Check a win he’ll never forget.
“As someone who graduated from Clint and considers Clint head coach Rosvel Martinez one of my greatest mentors, it’s a deeply personal win,” Check said. “Clint has always been a respected opponent, and this victory not only boosts the morale of our team but also the community who have been so supportive in my time as head coach. The win also represents the growth and progress we’ve made as a program.”
The Lobos have overcome adversity all year long. Check noted their starting quarterback got hurt in a scrimmage and five offensive starters went down back in week two. Now, at 2-2 in district, the Lobos suddenly have a shot to push up the standings as they look to get back to the playoffs after missing out a year ago.
“I’m so proud of everyone that has stepped in to fight back,” Check said in regards to the ups-and-downs his team has faced. “Every game from here on is so crucial because of the 9-team district. This win shows that we’re moving in the right direction, but we know there’s still a lot of work to be done.”
That work will continue this Friday at home against El Paso Irvin. It’s a huge clash with Irvin currently holding the final playoff spot and the Lobos sitting right behind them in fifth. Kickoff will be at 7:00.
