In every season since 2015, the Chaparrals have played in a playoff game over Thanksgiving weekend.
That tradition will continue this year.
It was all about the defense for Westlake, limiting San Antonio Brennan to a single score in a 24-7 victory on Friday at Burger Stadium. It was an impressive effort, considering the Bears came into the game averaging more than 44 points per game.
Senior middle linebacker Elliott Schaper was a standout on that side of the ball, icing the Brennan offense with an interception in the fourth quarter. Defensive lineman Cullen Devine also hauled in his first career touchdown on a 2-yard reception from quarterback Rees Wise in the first half.
The Bears were doomed by numerous miscues, including a duo of special teams errors that resulted in two Chaparral touchdowns.
The mistakes forced Brennan to play catchup for the rest of the contest.
Trailing 24-0 in the fourth quarter, the Bears finally got on the board. Following receiver Melvin Khan’s huge 75-yard scramble, quarterback Cayden Glass punched the ball at the 1-yard line. Khan had a team-high in yards with five catches for 87 yards.
After the win, Westlake improves to 4-0 against Brennan, with their previous matchup occurring in the fourth round of the 2022 playoffs, where the Bears fell 47-7.
The Chaps haven’t lost to a San Antonio team since falling to Clark in 2008.
Next up, the Westlake will face the victor of Los Fresnos vs. Buda Johnson next Saturday. The neutral conference matchup will kickoff today at 3 p.m..
