The 2017 Cedar Hill Longhorns finished up their spring with an energetic and spirited game last Friday night at Longhorn Stadium.

Head Coach Carlos Lynn took over for Head Coach Joey McGuire, who took a coaching position at Baylor under the new Head Coach Matt Rhule. Coach Lynn, who was the defensive coordinator for Cedar Hill in 2006, coached on Coach McGuire’s staff from 1998-2007. Coach Lynn left his Head Coach post at Seguin HS to take over the Longhorns in 2017. He takes over a team who finished 11-3 with a 2nd place finish in district 7-6A.

Each squad wore different uniforms for this controlled scrimmage. The Longhorn offense wore red uniforms and the defensive wore black uniforms. Speaking with Coach Lynn after the game ended, he explained that there has been stiff competition at the QB position during spring practice. The battle has been between Yizalle Whitfield and newcomer Shayne Lawrence. Both QBs took snaps under the center with an equal amount of playing time.

QB Shayne Lawrence led the red offense down the field using his quick feet on running plays and precision passing for an early score on a 30 yard pass for a 7-0 lead. Whitfield led the Longhorns on a scoring drive that ended with Cameron Fleming darting up the sideline for a 2nd TD. Fleming ran hard all game long showing power running with the ability to make the defenders miss in the open field. No stranger to making highlight reel plays, Josh Fleeks made a few electrifying plays for the red offense. On several occasions, he took direct snaps against the black defense cutting through the defense and making defenders miss. Fleeks, who has committed to play his college football at Baylor, is as advertised and demonstrated why he is so highly sought after by several Big 12 schools. Josh Fleeks and Cameron Fleming, along with Lawrence and Whitfield will have defense coordinators around DFW and the State of Texas trying to come up with game plans to combat the speed and versatile athletes of the of the Longhorns’ potent offense.

On the offensive line, Cedar Hill is known for producing D-1 talent. Class of 2020 Tackle Courtland Ford (6’5,290) is in position to become the next great Longhorn lineman. Ford has 5 star talent and will be highly recruited by Big 12 and SEC colleges in the future. Up front, the Cedar Hill O-line averages 300 LBS. Parker Cupp (6’5,285) and Steve Carter(6’3,268) help Ford anchor a massive offensive line.

The Cedar Hill defense, who wore black uniforms for this game, came into the game with a reputation of having great speed and play making ability. The Longhorns lost Dimitri Moore (Vanderbilt) to the SEC, but return several starters from the last 2016 team. Shabazz Dotson (6’3,271) and Xavier Ross (6’4, 274) return to create havoc for opposing offenses. Dotson and Ross form a formidable defensive line combination. Throughout scrimmage the red offense made plays, but the black defense made them earn it.

Dotson had 2 sacks and several tackles for loss. Linebackers Chase Albercrombie and Caleb Scott made several plays to stop the red offense. Courtney Ogilive (5’10, 175) and Donovan Collins (5’10,175) lead the Longhorn secondary. The black defense gave a few points in the 1 st half, but didn’t give up points to the red offense in the 4th quarter.

According to Coach Lynn, if the Longhorns focus on themselves and play Cedar Hill football the sky is the limit. With Longhorns about to begin playing summer 7 on 7 games, Cedar Hill wants to build chemistry between the QB’s and receivers, as well as develop defensive team chemistry. Cedar Hill is putting Texas on notice that they intend to grab another State Championship.
