According to multiple reports, SMU is set to hire former Cal and Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes as the next head coach of the Mustangs.

Dykes would replace Chad Morris, who left SMU to take the Arkansas head coaching job last week after three seasons at the Hilltop. Morris led the Mustangs to a 7-5 record and a berth in the Frisco Bowl.

The son of former Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes spent the 2017 season as an offensive analyst at TCU after being fired by Cal at the end of the 2016 season. Prior to his stint in Fort Worth, he went 19-30 in four seasons at Cal and went 22-15 in three seasons at Louisiana Tech. Dykes also took home a WAC title with the Bulldogs in 2011.

Several SMU players had taken to social media advocating for the school to hire assistant head coach Jeff Traylor to the position. However, it appears that the administration has chosen to go a different direction.

SMU plays Louisiana Tech on December 20 in the Frisco Bowl.
