4A Team of the Week: Pittsburg Pirates
The odds were against Pittsburg going into Friday night. The Pirates had not beaten Gilmer since 2018 and were considered 26-point underdogs, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
What happened next will be a night long remembered in Pittsburg. A wild shootout ensued. Pirate quarterback Kevin Johnson completed four passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Tamar Palmer rushed for 187 yards and three scores.
With every Pittsburg score, Gilmer seemed to respond. That led the game to be in the balance with just seconds to go. Pittsburg trailed 56-55 but had the ball at the Gilmer 15-yard line.
Kicker Jeremiah Flores trotted out for a 32-yard field goal. It may have been just his third attempt of the year, but Flores didn’t blink, booting it through as time expired to seal the 58-56 upset for his Pirates.
Pittsburg’s defense also deserves a lot of credit, forcing five turnovers on the night. Palmer had two fumble recoveries, while freshman Brysen Walker had one. Camdyn Doddy and Johnson each had interceptions. Doddy also led the receiving corps with three catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Pittsburg is now 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in district. The Pirates will look to continue to build towards their second-straight playoff berth this Friday when they host Spring Hill.
