It was a busy night for the scoreboard operator at Davenport Stadium on Friday night.
Tivy and Davenport both entered the contest at 1-0 in district play. In their respective district openers, Davenport scored 56, while Tivy put up 70.
Those offenses picked up right where they left off. Heading into the fourth quarter, Tivy trailed 66-56.
Fortunately for the Antlers, they had running back Aiden Zavala. He punched in a one-yard touchdown run to cut the Davenport lead to 66-63. On Tivy’s ensuing possession, Zavala came up with his seventh and most consequential touchdown of the night on a 15-yard reception from Cohen Sterling.
That would be the final score of the game as Tivy held on for an unbelievable 70-66 victory.
“I’m extremely proud of our young men and the way they never gave up and just kept competing,” Tivy head coach Curtis Neill said. “In a game like that, there are going to be a lot of ups and downs, but our guys never flinched. They kept believing in each other and found a way to finish.”
Zavala finished with 234 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground along with 139 receiving yards and two more touchdowns through the air.
Kerrville Tivy running back Aiden Zavala was LIVING in the endzone all game long…a big part of the reason why the Antlers came back to win a 70-66 thriller against Davenport.

Sterling was a dual threat all night, throwing for 352 yards and five touchdowns while also adding 134 yards on the ground. In the receiving corps, Kyrin Armelin had five catches for 130 yards. Kenyon Armelin, Wesley Miller, and Reid Sonnenberg also all had touchdown catches.
With the win, Tivy is now 5-0 and 2-0 in district play, and Neill thinks his group is building something special.
“I think it’s a direct byproduct of how they show up every single day and bust their tails for each other,” Neill said. “They’ve built a strong brotherhood, and when things got tough, they leaned on that. To find a way to get a big district win in a game like that says a lot about the character and toughness of our football team.”
