In this week’s “Game of the Week”, two undefeated teams go head-to-head in the gridiron ring of Texas high school football and will slug it out to keep their perfect records intact.
Here’s our analysis for tonight’s match:
Cedar Park (7-0, 5-0 District)
Since hiring coach Carl Abseck, the Timberwolves have not lost under his leadership. The second year coach spent ten years as a coordinator for Cedar Park, assisting in the team’s run to eight playoff berths and a Class 4A state title in 2012.
Quarterback Mak Sexton is averaging 205 yards per game and has tossed nine touchdown passes. The offensive swirling dervish for the Timberwolves is running back Tyler Lavine, who has scored at least one touchdown in the past seven consecutive games. His most recent offensive explosion came against Georgetown last week, accounting for four total touchdowns behind an offensive line that started the season with significant inexperience, but has improved every game — allowing the offensive backfield open lanes and providing crucial blocks.
The offense is averaging 35.1 points per game, and a stout defense only allowing 7.6 points per game; defensive coordinator Brent Brittain’s unit has posted four shutouts this season. Last season’s veteran group allowed one team to top 24 points; this year’s defense has limited the year’s high to 20 points.
Cedar Park has not lost since they dropped the Class 5A Division II state-title game against Ennis in 2014.
Pflugerville Connally (7-0, 5-0 District)
Unlike Cedar Park — that carried the winning expectations on their shoulders heading into the year — the underdog Pflugerville have evolved into an unexpected postseason contender. Dual threat quarterback Robert Patterson has accounted for 23-of-28 touchdowns this season, averaging 177 passing yards and 77 rushing yards per game. The senior leads an explosive offense averaging 36.6 points per game; five different Pflugerville receivers have grabbed at least 10 passes this season.
The Cougars are coming off a near upset loss against Rouse, in which they were down 19 points at the half, only to triumph 20-19 at the end of regulation.
Prediction: Cedar Park
Pflugerville has been the feel good Class 5A story of the season, but the fable is about to conclude with a heartbreaking finale tonight against Cedar Ridge. The Timberwolves are too complete on both sides of the ball, and will blowout a Cougars hapless defense that has allowed over 30 points twice this season.
