Bi-District Six-Man Team of the Week: Chester

Six-Man Team of the Week: Chester Yellowjackets

Chester made the playoffs for the first time since 2015 a year ago but fell to Medina 52-6.

This time, despite being listed as 28-point underdogs by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Yellowjackets felt like they had a shot at the Bobcats.

Record wise we may have the underdog for that game, Chester head coach Chris Hicks said. “But we felt like we were evenly matched against them and if we executed and played a physical game, we could win.”

The Yellowjackets did just that knocking off the Bobcats 36-20 for their first playoff win since that 2015 season. Jesse Bittick and Keighen Green kept the Yellowjacket offense rolling on the day. Bittick had 14 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns, while Green finished with nine carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Bittick also had a good game defensively, finishing with ten tackles and a fumble recovery.

And after Chester watched its shot at a district title slip away in a 98-66 defeat to Leverett’s Chapel two weeks ago, this win was an especially meaningful one.

“From a coaching standpoint, I have always felt that the goal from the start of the season is to win a championship,” Hicks said. “We were not district champions, so to win a bi-district championship was a special motivator for our kids.”

Chester has never won two playoff games in the same season in school history. If they can do that this year, it will be a victory to remember as the Yellowjackets have to face #5 Jonesboro on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Bryan.
