Cuero Gobbles Up Beeville In Battle of the Undefeated

The Cuero Gobblers have one of the best mascots in Texas. They may also have one of the best high school teams in the state.

In the heart of DeWitt county, Cuero dominated the Beeville Trojans from the get-go, triumphing 49-21. The victory comes a year after the Gobblers defeated the Trojans by more than 50 points last season. Except this time, both teams entered the gridiron with a perfect record; both were two of 22 undefeated opponents heading into last Friday’s contest.

In a rivalry that has spanned nearly a century, Cuero jumped out to a comfortable 28-0 start before Beeville even saw the end zone. The team maintained a consistent advantage throughout.

Running back Kenneth Jackson led an aggressive offensive onslaught, rushing for 229 yards and three touchdowns— including a 69-yard touchdown at the end of regulation.

So far, the Gobblers have scored at least 40 in three of their four games. Besides a tight contest against Yoakum, the team has only allowed an average 11 points per game. Beeville only managed a net of 82 yards.

Cuero are now sitting pretty at a flawless 5-0. After last season’s humbling defeat at the hands of Wimberley in the semis, the Gobblers have their eyes firmly fixed on returning to the state championships, motivated by their rally cry “finish it!”

Cuero was playing in its 1,190th game—one of the oldest programs in TXHSFB. Its first game was—coincidentally—against Beeville in 1911, where the Trojans won 33-0.

Both Cuero and Beeville are entering a bye week before beginning district play.
