Former Cedar Hill Longhorn and Texas A&M transfer LaQuvionte Gonzalez has been dismissed from the Kansas football team, according to a report from KUSports.com. The senior-to-be was the Jayhawks’ second leading receiver a year ago. David Beaty is expected to speak on the situation at a previously scheduled press conference on Tuesday.
Gonzalez was reportedly dismissed for an unspecified violation of team rules, so in reality, the reasoning could be anything. The receiving corps is expected to be one of the Jayhawks’ strengths this year, so the blow of losing this extremely talented wideout is softened, but it’s arguable that it’s still significant. Steven Sims Jr., the team’s leading wide receiver last year, will return, and there are several true freshman who could become contributors.
Last year, Gonzalez had 62 catches for 729 yards and three touchdowns. He was an adept return man as well, notching a kickoff return touchdown, and was a key part of one of the most creative trick plays in the 2016 college football season.
Gonzalez is heading into his senior year, and while he still has eligibility left, it’s unknown where he will transfer. Many programs will undoubtedly be interested, Gonzalez was a four star prospect coming out of Cedar Hill, and put up some solid numbers despite having the handicap of playing for a Kansas team that has struggled so much for the past few years that they’ve become the butt of jokes around the Big 12.
