Upset of the Year? 75 Game District Win-Streak Snapped

The game of the week did not disappoint.   The Katy Tigers came into the week as our #2 team in the state of Texas (CLICK HERE for the Top 25) and spent time at #1 for a few weeks.  Meanwhile, The Katy Tompkins Falcons started the season outside of our top 25, moved into it after their week 3 55-0 win over Cinco Ranch, and moved up to #13 this week coming off of their third straight shut-out.  Katy was still a very big favorite. In our online poll asking who would win the game, 89% of you picked Katy. But the Falcons pulled the big upset.

Katy has not lost a district game in 75 games.  Their last loss was in 2008 to Cinco Ranch.  Those following the Flacons did think they had a good chance as they lost just by 5, 35-30 last year and seemed to be an improved team this year.

The first half was a close battle.  Katy had a 10-7 lead late in the first half, led by Jalen Davis’s 86-yard touchdown run.  The lead could have easily been more, but the Tigers threw two interceptions in the first half.  Katy seemed to be starting to take control of the game, but that changed.  Tompkins drove the field in just 1:02 and Quarterback Jalen Milroe found Josh McMillan for an 18-yard touchdown, their second of three touchdown connections.  They took a 14-10 lead into the half.

Our Twitter account lit up as the game went into halftime.  #TXHSFB nation took a break from the week of non-stop election coverage to follow this game online.  We were tagged in over 100 tweets about this game and the score.

The third quarter started as a defensive battle with both teams being held to field goals.  The teams kept giving up a few first downs but both made stops when they needed to.  Katy had several long runs but struggled to convert on third downs.  Then, the Falcons made what turned out to be the winning play of the game.  On 4th and 17, too far out to kick a field goal but too far into Katy territory to punt, they went for it.  Milroe found McMillan for a 30-yard touchdown to give Tompkins a 24-13 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Katy shut Tompkins down in the fourth quarter, but it would not matter.  The Tigers were only able to put together one scoring drive in the fourth, ending with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Koger to Taylor Saulsberry that cut the lead to 24-19.  Katy did have one last chance.  Their defense forced the Falcons to punt from inside their 10-yard line.  Tompkins punter, Hunter Huckaby, blasted a 55-yard punt.  The punt was the key to winning the game.  Katy had no timeouts, and with 3:30 to go, if they were well inside midfield, they’d been able to keep running the ball and may have found the endzone. But, backed up at the 38-yard line, and with no timeouts, they had to pass.  On 4th and long, the Falcons sacked Koger and won the game.

FINAL SCORE:  Katy Tigers 19 – Katy Tompkins Falcons 24

Tompkins is now first in District 19-6A.  Katy now joins Katy Taylor with one loss.  They play Katy Taylor next week in what will likely be for second place in the District. Tompkins will be big favorites in their last three games and should end the regular season 9-0 and District 19 Champs.
