After his first season in San Antonio resulted in a bowl bid, second-year head coach Frank Wilson will continue to take his success to the bank. The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved a new five-year contract for the UTSA football coach that will run through the 2021 season. The five-year contract is worth $4.775 million, making coach Wilson the highest paid head coach in Conference USA.

“We are very excited about the leadership that Coach Wilson has brought to our football program and athletic department as a whole,” said Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey, in a press release. “Our objective is to be a dominant player in Conference USA, and making a commitment to Coach Wilson is an intentional step in ensuring that we become a program of excellence. A strong commitment to our football program will build the foundation that is needed to strengthen and grow resources for our all of our sports. We are fortunate and grateful for our donors who share in our vision and have enabled us to make this commitment.”
The previously floundering program stagnated in the latter years with former Miami coach Larry Coker, but bringing on Wilson breathed immediate life into the Roadrunners, finishing the year with a 6-7 record and their first bowl berth. The extension will surprise no one in South Texas. Wilson was on the shortlist for various vacancies, including his old stomping grounds at LSU. San Antonio’s best bet was locking their coaching golden goose up before any competitors snatched their prize from the Alamodome.
The new contract guarantees $900,000 for the 2017 season, $950,000 for 2018 and $975,000 for each of the following three seasons for a total of $4.775 million. The agreement replaces UTSA’s prior contact, which guaranteed $3.5 million through the 2020 season.
