3A Team of the Week: Shallowater Mustangs
Coming off a 71-39 win over Dalhart in its district opener, Shallowater faced a daunting first district road trip of the season.
The Mustangs traveled to Bushland to take on the number two team in 3A Division I as 28-point underdogs.
However, they certainly didn’t look like underdogs on the field on Friday.
Shallowater jumped out to a 34-7 advantage over Bushland behind four touchdowns by Mustang junior running back Cannon Reed.
Bushland came roaring back, eventually cutting the deficit to 34-28. But just as Bushland looked to deny Shallowater a notable upset, Reed iced the game with his fifth rushing touchdown of the night as Shallowater went on to secure a 43-28 victory.

Reed finished with 188 yards and five scores on the ground, while Mustang senior quarterback Brooks Carter threw for 250 yards and a touchdown.
With the win, Shallowater advanced to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in District 2-3A Division I play. The road doesn’t get any easier as the Mustangs will take on 6-2 Muleshoe this Friday.
But with a victory in that matchup, Shallowater would secure its third-straight district title.
