Rankings, playoffs and district championships—that was on everyone’s mind after the unfoldings of week seven in El Paso high school football.
Through different high-scoring battles and gritty games, week seven was a keystone week that will set up an interesting finish in the El Paso area.
District 2-5A
Del Valle 25 – Eastlake 21
Both teams battled in the back-and-forth battle, and it all came down to come play.
With just seconds left in the game, down a score, Del Valle quarterback Raymond Montez connected with receiver Danny Cortez for his third—and most important—touchdown of the night, giving Del Valle the 25-21 lead.
Now, Del Valle (7-1, 6-0 2-5A) is in control of their own destiny and are the clear frontrunners for the district title.
Bel Air 49 – Hanks 28
Bel Air took a big step forward with a big win over Hanks last night. They dominated the half, taking a 35-7 lead, which they rode out for the rest of the game. Despite Hanks scoring 21 second half points, it wasn’t enough to hold off Bel Air.
Now, Bel Air is in the driver’s seat to make the playoffs in 2-5A as the fourth spot, with just a plus-one game advantage over Canutillo. If Canutillo loses to Parkland—who is third place in the district—next week, Bel Air more than likely will close for a spot in the playoffs.
District 1-5A
Chapin 49 – Irvin 0; Andress 61 – Jefferson 0
The two District 1-5A leaders had statement victories last night in anticipation for big games ahead. Chapin (5-1, 3-0) dominated all sides of the ball against Irvin, and Andress (4-2, 3-0) had a big game against Jefferson and showed no mercy in their victory.
Next week, Andress will take on Burges, who is also undefeated. A win would put Andress in first place in the district. On the other end, Chapin has to wait two weeks to take on Burges, and then one more to take on Andress, which could be the deciding factor for the district title.
Nonetheless, Andress, Chapin and Burges all are set up for playoff berth. After Bowie’s big win over El Paso High, the last playoff spot is up for grabs.
Bowie 19, El Paso High 16
The Bowie Bears kept their playoff hopes alive on Friday night with a 19-16 win over the El Paso High Tigers. The Bears have made the playoffs for five years in a row and are currently tied with Austin and El Paso High for the fourth and final playoff spot. Bowie takes on Austin on Friday and if the Bears can find a way to win that game, it would put them in good position to secure that final playoff spot.
District 1-6A
Montwood 69 – Coronado 52
Montwood (7-0, 4-0) put up 728 yards of total offense as this game was a complete shootout in 1-6A play. Quarterback Andrew Fernandez led the troop as he threw for almost 600 yards and tallied eight touchdowns in their victory. Also, Montwood’s Tyreese Andrus caught the ball nine times for 237 yards and three touchdowns.
At the start it felt all Montwood as they amassed 35 points to start the game. Coronado continued to pick at the big lead, and cut the game at one point to 49-45 at the end of the third quarter. Montwood’s 21 fourth quarter points lifted them to a 69-52 win.
Montwood will now look ahead two weeks down the line when they will take on the only other undefeated team in 1-6A, Pebble Hills on November 3. That game could very well decide who takes the district championship.
El Dorado’s big 63-44 win against Franklin even makes them a possible contender for the title if Pebble Hills beats Montwood and they defeat Pebble Hills for the last game of the season.
With losses from Franklin and Coronado, both of those teams will fight in two weeks for what could be the last spot in 1-6A playoffs.
