2A Team of the Week: Post Antelopes

The past two seasons, Post has finished 2-8. Not this year. The Antelopes are now 4-0 after a 27-20 over rival Slaton in the War on 84.

Making the victory even more impressive was the fact that Post never led until the final minute of the game. The Antelopes overcame a 14-0 second half deficit to come home with the win.

Post head coach John Wright said sophomore quarterback Landyn Garcia really settled into the game after halftime. Garcia used his legs several times, rushing for 53 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries. His final score came with just a minute left, giving Post its decisive seven point lead.

He also had some big completions to Keyondre Jefferson, three catches for 73 yards, and Sean Ramos, one catch for 55 yards. And while the offense got in its groove, Wright praised his defense for “playing lights out.”

“Overall, the team perseverance that we showed was the key,” Wright said. “These guys are prepared to do whatever it takes.”

Post running back Ian Vergara also deserves a lot of credit. He was the Antelopes’ bell cow with 31 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Jefferson also had an interception, while Mason Wright led the unit as a whole with seven total tackles.

The Antelopes made back-to-back state title games in 2019 and 2020. And although they’ve won just two games in each of the past two seasons, this year’s team looks ready to compete for a playoff spot. They’ll get one last shot to get ready for the games that matter this Friday as they host Farwell in their final non-district game.
