Flatonia Bulldogs named Texas HS Football's Week Eight Class 2A Team of the Week after defeating Kenedy 35-34 with a dramatic 20-play, 99-yard touchdown drive capped by Boston Targac's game-winning score with 14 seconds remaining.

2A Team of the Week: Flatonia Bulldogs

Flatonia head coach Matt Uzzell’s message to his team has been clear this year: The Bulldogs want to earn the right to an 11th game.

With Flatonia’s last playoff berth coming back in 2022, no player on the Bulldogs’ roster has experienced the postseason. Friday’s matchup against Kenedy presented an opportunity to take a major step toward changing that.

Kenedy entered the game at 2-1 in district play, while Flatonia was just 1-1. The Bulldogs were also considered 14-point underdogs.

Early in the fourth quarter, it looked like that was exactly how the game was going to play out. Kenedy led 34-28 with the ball on Flatonia’s one yard line.

What happened next could define Flatonia’s season.

The Bulldogs stopped Kenedy on fourth down to get the ball back.

They then put together an incredibly methodical 20-play, 99-yard drive. Quarterback Boston Targac capped off the incredible drive with a one-yard run on a tush push for the game-winning touchdown with just 14 seconds remaining.

With the 35-34 victory, Flatonia is now firmly in the playoff picture.

“I was really proud of my guys for finding a way to make the plays necessary to get the win. After giving up two 14 point leads and ultimately falling behind, they still did what it took to get the job done,” Uzzell said. “The win is a huge step in our goal to earn the right to play 11 games this year.  We are in an extremely tough district and representing it in the playoffs would be a huge reward for all of the hard work these kids have invested into this program.”

Offensively, running back Adrian Anderson was the busiest man on the night with 33 carries for 248 yards and a touchdown. Targac had two rushing touchdowns, while Jaylon Anderson had both a 12-yard touchdown reception and a 35-yard touchdown pass.

On the other side of the ball, defensive linemen Gabe Aguillon (12 tackles and a sack) and Kevin Ramirez (10 tackles) played every snap on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Flatonia currently sits third in district and is 4-3 overall on the season. The Bulldogs will have another big test this Friday when they travel to undefeated Shiner.
