Trailing an undefeated team 28-0 is usually not a recipe for success. However, it was the situation Wallis Brazos found itself in against Lexington on Friday.
Yet, the Cougars didn’t give up.
First, Brazos quarterback Bryson Bennett rushed for a touchdown late in the second quarter to cut his team’s deficit to 21 points at the half.
And in the second half, Cougar running back Vinny Aguilar took over.
Aguilar had touchdown runs of 3, 8, and 24 yards, while the Cougars also scored on a blocked punt to secure an astonishing 35-28 win with 35 unanswered points.
Aguilar finished the game with 125 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.
Defensively, the Cougars were stout, forcing three punts, a turnover on downs, and an interception in the second half.
From 1-9 to 8-3 to playoffs to 24pt underdogs to defeating the #8 team in the state last night!
After their shocking upset victory over Lexington, the Cougars are on the verge of recapturing some of the magic they had in 2018 when they advanced to the regional semifinals.
Next up for Brazos will be a trip down to Gregory-Portland for its area round matchup against Hebbronville this Friday.
