Contrary to how exciting and crazy the past couple weeks in El Paso high school football have been, the first round of the playoffs were pretty one-sided as all but two games from the El Paso area were decided by 15 points or more.

Here’s a breakdown of the past games this weekend and what’s to come:

Thursday

Montwood 42, Midland High 35

Standout quarterback Andrew Fernandez of the Montwood Rams held on all four quarters for their first bi-district win since 2011. He finished with 401 total yards, 245 passing and 156 rushing on the night.

Next: the Montwood Rams will have to take on Arlington High (9-2), who upset Fossil Ridge 27-13. The two will meet halfway at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa for a Saturday game on Nov. 25 at 4 p.m.

Andress 37 – Bel Air 34

Although Bel Air simply refused to give up against the no. 1 team of Andress, the Golden Eagles were able to hold on at the very end and win 37-34 to advance to the area round of the playoffs.

Next: the Golden Eagles will face Lubbock Monterey (7-4) on Friday, Nov. 24, in Midland. Monterey is coming off a 54-31 win over Amarillo.

Friday

Midland Lee 63 – El Dorado 0

After losing standout quarterback Cedarious Barfield to an injury early in the game, the El Dorado Aztecs were not able to get anything going offensively and were dominated 63-0.

Next: Midland Lee will advance to take on Arlington Lamar (6-4) for the area round of the playoffs.

Odessa Permian 50, Coronado 17

The unique triple-option offense of Permian was too much for the Coronado Thunderbirds Friday night, as they could not stop the Panthers, losing 50-17.

Next: Permian will make an effort to stretch at a run in the playoffs as they take on Texas Arlington Martin (10-1) next Friday at Maverick Stadium in Arlington.

San Angelo Central 35, Pebble Hills 20

Taking on one of the top powers in the region after back-to-back losses, Pebble Hills was going into Friday’s game with a chip on their shoulders.

However, Pebble Hills was able to truly hang in there throughout the game. Maverick McIvor, San Angelo Central’s quarterback, finished the game with four impressive touchdowns, winning 35-20.

Next: San Angelo will have a tough game against Mansfield (10-1), who is coming off a monstrous 42-3 win over Keller Central.

Del Valle 49 – Chapin 28

Del Valle capitalized off five total Chapin turnovers as the Conquistadors stole the bi-district championship and advanced to the area round of the playoffs.

Del Valle quarterback Raymond Montez had over 300 yards of total offense with four total touchdowns in the win.

Next: Del Valle will take on an undefeated Lubbock Coronado (10-0) that just rolled over Randall, 51-35. They will play Friday, Nov. 24 in Roswell, N.M.

Eastlake 56 – Jefferson 13

Despite a vying effort from the last-seed Jefferson squad, Eastlake overpowered the Silver Foxes on Friday night and took the bi-district title with effectiveness.

Next: Eastlake will square up against Abilene Cooper (8-3) on Friday night in Fort Stockton. Abilene Cooper recently came off a 63-14 win over Plainview.

Parkland 45 – Burges 7

When both no. 3 teams from 1-5A and 2-5A squared off, both their numbers seemed to write this game up as an evenly matched game. However, Parkland showed no mercy on Friday night, topping Burges 45-7.

Stellar back for Parkland Deion Hankins finished the night with 191 yards on just 13 carries, with a pair of touchdowns.

Parkland will now face Lubbock Cooper (7-4) in Midland next Friday. Cooper is coming off a close 28-27 win over Dumas.
