Luling traveled to Marion as 18-point underdogs last Friday in a battle for the final playoff spot in District 13-3A Division I.
Heading into the game, the Eagles knew they faced an uphill battle against a 6-3 Marion team looking for its eighth consecutive playoff berth.
Yet, under the Friday Night Lights, the Eagles came up with big plays when they needed them the most.
Sophomore running back Cayden Lopez rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles offensively, but it was their special teams that delivered the play of the game.
With Marion punting near midfield with just minutes remaining, Nehemiah Murry blocked the punt before scooping it up and racing over 45 yards for the score. That touchdown gave Luling a 28-26 lead it wouldn’t relinquish as it held on to earn its second consecutive playoff berth.
The win means Luling finishes the regular season 6-4, its first winning season since 2013. Now, the Eagles will go in search of their first playoff win since 2015 on Thursday when they travel to Jourdanton.
