Week Eight 1A Team of the Week: Springlake-Earth Wolverines
1A Team of the Week: Springlake-Earth Wolverines
A six-man district with Happy, Nazareth, and Springlake-Earth always meant that someone with a playoff pedigree wouldn’t have a ticket to the postseason.
Springlake-Earth wanted to be sure it wasn’t them. The Wolverines went into the locker room down 22-14 against Nazareth this past Friday. They came out as a team on a mission, clawing their way to 34 unanswered points in a huge 48-22 victory.
It was a 20 minute performance that could be a season-defining one for the Wolverines.
“We felt like this was a must-win game in order to secure one of those playoff spots,” Springlake-Earth head coach Juan Salas said. “Our team had that mentally the whole week of practice and we took that mentally into the game. We just knew we were going to have to out work them and be more physical than Naz and that’s what we did.”
Nehemiah Castillo proved to be swifter than the Swifts with 267 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries.
Froylan Agundiz kept the Nazareth defense on its toes too with 73 passing yards and a touchdown and another 75 yards on the ground. Tyler Tanaro also came up with a couple of big moments, finishing with a rushing and a receiving touchdown.
Defensively, Tanaro had 17 total tackles. Kaleb Castillo put Nazareth’s backfield under a lot of pressure, finishing with three sacks and eight total tackles.
The Wolverines may have one foot in the door when it comes to claiming a playoff spot, but Salas and company will know the job is not done yet. They have another huge clash against Happy this week. A win there would not only clinch the Wolverines a playoff spot, it’d clinch them the district title too.
