1A Six Man
Area Round 1A Team of the Week: Borden County Coyotes
1A Team of the Week: Borden County Coyotes
Finishing second in a six-man district creates quite the gauntlet of a playoff run. It’s one so far that the Borden County Coyotes have passed with flying colors.
After knocking off #5 Buena Vista in the bi-district round, the Coyotes repeated the feat this past Friday with a 52-38 win over #6 Happy.
“I’ve really been impressed with how much this young team has grown up in the last month,” Borden County head coach Craig Steele said. “They have really paid attention to details and are playing a tougher brand of football than we were playing earlier in the year. Our effort and heart on both sides of the ball has fueled this run.”
Against Happy, Coach Steele’s son Braden led the offense with a monster effort. He threw for 187 yards and five touchdowns, while adding another 129 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
His receiving corps stayed busy. Jeff Napper and Adam Sosa each had two touchdowns receptions, while Issac Martinez and Tye Stipe each had one.
Defensively, Stipe continually knocked the Cowboys off their horse. He finished with 19 tackles, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Datch Flanigan was right behind him with 15 tackles and two tackles for loss.
Ethan Scott also had a forced fumble, while Martinez had the defense’s lone interception.
With the win, Borden County is headed back to the third round of the playoffs for the second-straight year. Last season, they fell to Westbrook in a 110-65 shootout.
They’ll hope to have a different result this time around when they face Whiteface on Saturday at 6:00 in Lockney.
