After 24 minutes, it was back to the drawing board for Goldthwaite.
The Eagles were trying to close out an undefeated regular season and secure their first district title in 11 years in the process, but they were in a 20-6 hole against Stamford.
“What was said to the guys was, to take it play by play,” Goldthwaite head coach Andy Howard said. “No matter the outcome, play as hard as you can on every single play. There is still a lot of time left on the clock. How you play will define our character.”
In a mud bowl, Eagles quarterback Hayes Greenway scored two short rushing touchdowns to cut the Stamford lead to 20-18.
Then with just over three minutes to go, Landry Sanderson found the end zone from eight yards out, completing Goldthwaite’s comeback and sealing a memorable 24-20 victory.

“The district title is a huge reward for our kids,” Goldthwaite head coach Andy Howard said. “These boys have been working for this success over the past 4 years. It is great to see their hard work come to fruition.”
Sanderson was the bell cow in Goldthwaite’s 18-0 second half run, finishing the game with 34 carries for 149 yards and a score. Greenway threw for 110 yards and also added 36 yards and two scores on the ground. Aidyn Lee led the receiving corps with four catches for 69 yards and also had an interception defensively.
The Eagles will now have a bye week before the playoffs as they’ll look to advance past the first round for the third-straight year.
